Friday Show and Tell..........

Well, it's Friday and it is Show and Tell time over at Kelli's.........

Several years ago I was in town and saw a sign 'PORCH SALE'......it looked interesting enough to stop.....after looking through stuff that I had some just like and would like to be rid of, I saw something with beautiful colors, pink, green, yellow and purple...upon closer examination I saw that it was a wooden necklace. Each hibiscus blossom was a different color with green leaves in between....then either end had wooden beans. I asked the price and she told me that it had belonged to her mother. The price was $2.00. Of course, I immediately paid for it...I've often thought, how could she part with it......evidently she wasn't sentimental.

I look forward to getting my jewelry out each spring so that I can wear this necklace. I've had so many compliments on it......it makes me happy to see it and to wear it.....do you have a favorite piece of jewelry?

Dear Friend Betty.....

What a pretty necklace, it looks so good on you too. Well done you, for having spotted it at the porch sale. Betty, you know only too well the sentiment I feel for things that once belonged to loved ones. My Mother’s jewellery is very precious to me and like you, I certainly could never part with it.

You ask if I have a favourite item of jewellery, well, there is one particular piece that I treasure greatly, it is a gold broach set with one small diamond and two rubies, but what I love most of all about it is, in the back there is a small casement that holds a lock of very fine brown hair. The story behind the broach is - It was found by my Grandfather, when he lived in Scotland. He went to great lengths to trace the owner without success, finally he handed in at the local Police Station and thought no more about it. Months afterwards it was returned to him as being the rightful owner as no one had claimed it. He gave it to the young girl he was courting, my Grandmother, with strict instructions that the hair must never be taken out of the pin. My Grandmother eventually gave it to her youngest daughter, my Mother, who subsequently gave it to me, it will eventually pass to my own daughter Julia, with my Grandfather’s request still in force, that the lock of hair must not be taken from the broach. I have asked my daughter to pass it on to her daughter Laura thereafter.

I’ve often looked at the small lock of hair and wondered! It is so fine that I believe it is the hair of a baby. Maybe the Mother lost her baby and this little curl was to be a lasting fond memory of that child. We will never know, but what I do know is, that Grandfather’s sentiment about it lives on. It is very precious and it will be kept so.

Maybe I will do a posting about it one day. Have a great weekend. Marion

Betty, I enjoyed what you said on
Dot's picture of the spider web.

I guess if we would pray...and his will be done...and then do it ...we could build a nice web, but we spend on time doing our own will instead.

I'm amazed that the necklace is crafted from wood. I think I'd stop at something called a porch sale too! Blessings...

Your necklace is beautiful! I have a wooden necklace too, except mine is made up of several small carved elephants and beads, all made of wood. I love things like this, don't you?

I hope you'll stop by and see my Show and Tell... my "garden dawgs."

Very lovely. I would not have sold it either--even if I never wore it!Something that belonged to my mother would be a treausre forever for me.

In fact, one of my favorite pieces of jewlery is my mother's high school ring. She actually wore it! It show the wesr. You have to look closely to figure out the symbols and dates on it. Inside her initials show clearly--BBA. It's not my prettiest, or the one with the most monetary value, but for sentimentality it is very important to me and I wear it often.

That IS a very pretty and unique necklace. You wear it so well!!

My favorite jewelry is a pair of earrings my husband gave me a few years ago. They are gold hoops and come with 5 different semi-precious stones that I can interchange. There isn't an outfit one of them don't go with. I just love them.
