Friday Show and Tell....Surprise Lilies or Johnny Jumpups........Pine Cone Lilies

It's Friday and Show and Tell over at Kelli's..........

These are the sweetest little red lilies......they pop up almost over night with their happy, red blooms......later the green foliage appears. They are known as Surprise Lilies or in our area Johnny Jumpups.....I have many of these scattered around.........

Many years ago, a friend shared this unusual flower with me........it is a Pine Cone Lily. The bloom begins as a small green pine cone shape. As it matures it grows larger and eventually turns a reddish color. The foliage looks very much like August Lily or Ginger Lily. If you touch the pine cone bloom, it smells like turpentine. It really does........

It is a fantastic conversation piece........children as well as adults are amazed by it.......

Oh Betty, what an unique flower, I've never seen it before!

By the way, the other white ones on your last post look lovely, too!

Have a great Friday with lots of interesting S&T's!

Best wishes from Germany,

How awesome. I wonder if I can get that Pine cone like plant to bloom out here in dry Colorado.

Please stop by my site and enter my contest for a hard cover Terri Blackstock book.

These flowers are beautiful. My grandmother planted both varieties and even though her old homeplace is deserted, these flowers pop up in the most unique places each fall. In fact, I need to go check these out and try to transplant some into my yard. Thanks for sharing, this brought back great memories for me.

Wow isn't God awesome in His creation--I have never seen anything like that!! I can clearly see that Women are made in his image--I think of how they love textures, varieties of colors, etc and it is all part of the creative spirit God has given us, Praise HIm for his good gifts!!

The lovely red lilies do not only pop up unexpectedly in the garden but also all over the bloggosphere. Very amusing to see. The lilies are very pretty, I wonder if they will grow in my garden. Perhaps it's too cold where I live.

I must admit being very fond of flowers with a scent, but I draw the line at turpentine. ;-)

Have a lovely weekend!

It's a cute little thing. I have never seen one before. But I don't think that turpentine smell would agree with me too well. The white plant was pretty too.

Good Morning Betty....
I continued to be surprised with the many unusual flowers in your garden that I’ve not seen before. The pink lily is so pretty and the pine cone too. The perfume of flowers is to attract insects for pollination, I’m interested to know what insects are attracted to the smell of turpentine. Have you noticed? Marion
