Today is Friday and it's Show and Tell over at Kelli's......but first please join me in praying for the people of Minneapolis. My heart is so heavy for the loss of life, the injured....all those connected by kinship and friendship......as well as the ones involved in recovery and medical workers........
This is a ladies' compact from long ago. It is silver, rectangular in shape. There are places for coins, her powder and powder puff. A chain to hang it over her arm...probably as she was shopping or dancing......
This are other compacts and the black oblong with the gold design is a glass case for folding glasses.......
In days around the turn of the 20th century, a lady would keep her hat, gloves and bag in the foyer. When guests came calling , if they were wanted, she would say, " I'm just arriving home."
If it was someone she didn't want to entertain, she would say, "I'm just on my way out."
Now is that smart or what..............................

Well, how clever! I guess today the lady could have her keys, cell phone, and sunglasses arranged in the foyer. Just a thought!
Good Show and Tell, Betty.
I just said a prayer, and thank you so much for directing the focus in the right place first.
I love the compacts and the gloves and gear by the door...clever indeed!

Love the compacts and gloves. Thanks for sharing.
Have a blessed weekend my friend.
Hugs, Lyndy
Well, I hope you're just arriving home....I'm here now. *giggles*
Great show and tell, and wonderful stuff you've collected. Wow, color me impressed.
Betty, thank you for reminding us to pray for those folks in Minneapolis.
The hat and gloves gave me a good laugh!
Absolutely beautiful treasures...I was just at the antique store yesterday looking at the vintage compacts. Thanks for sharing.
Take care,
Connie
My show and tell is up.
I had forgotten about those compacts!!! How neat that you have all these. I did not know that about the hat & gloves as a screening of visitors. How interesting!

Your compact collection is lovely. I knew about the custom of leaving an excuse by the door but had forgotten about it. The victorians had a good knack for being able to accomplish something with out offending. Very sweet post.
That is lovely. I have never seen an old compact up close. Wow.
I was born in the wrong era!
The compacts are marvelous.
Those compacts are fabulous!! I like the coin slots in the one.
The hat, etc., on the foyer table is a pretty clever idea.
Such beautiful vintage compacts!! Hmmm maybe I should learn to leave a hat, gloves and my purse near the door! lol Very smart indeed! hehe xox
That is smart! Love your pretty compacts, Betty. Very nice collection.
I posted my Eight Random Things today!

Cetainly a wonderful collection!
Very few of us carry a stunning compact ...I still do.hugs NG
My prayers have been ongoing for these people. It's so sad.
Very interesting about the hat and gloves by the door!
I'll say that they were smart! It brought a smile to my face, and even a chuckle!
These peices are so genteel! I love them. How sneaky to keep the hat and gloves close by the door! There have been a few times I would have loved to apply that trick!
I have seen the old compacts before who knows I may have even had one.lol but I don't remember ever seeing one with a place to put coins. I loved it when we used to wear gloves. It makes you feel so special, I thought. I loved the Post and I have most certainly been praying for those who were involved in any way with the bridge incident. I have always hated briges for that very reason. Some of the ones we have traveled over, I remember from my childhood. That can't be good even I am wearing out. connie from Texas
Hi Miz Betty...so sorry it's been so long between visits!
My heart aches for those in Minneapolis too...I've sent up prayers too!
I love your collection cof compacts and the trick the ladies used is a very smooth one!
:)
What lovely pieces; so much vintage charm!
Blessings,
Mrs. C
I just love that arrangement of the hat, gloves, and bag -- so pretty. The compacts look so elegant.
These are all so charming! What a nice collection!
The hat and gloves remind me of what my grandmother wore as a young girl in an antique photo. Believe it or not, though I'm only 44, my maternal grandmother was born in 1888! There's a beautiful photo of her at about 16 or 17, posing in a similar hat and gloves.
What a lovely collection, Betty! I loved seeing all the lady" things!
Kelli
